THE APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Inmate writes to Wholeway House and requests an application.

  2. Inmate receives a cover letter, brochure about Wholeway House and a pre-application.

  3. When inmate sends pre-application back, it is reviewed and a determination is made whether the application process is to continue. This is based on

    1. their conversion experience and involvement in chaplaincy programs

    2. their crime (we are not equipped to take repeat violent or sex offenders)

    3. amount of time they are serving (they are placed on hold if they have more than 5 yrs. before they can short way discharge or if they haven't completed at least 1/3 or 1/2 their sentence. That depends on which legislature their offense was committed in.

  4. Inmate is then sent a 6 page final application that has a database form field. Final applications that have not been processed through our database will not be accepted. This is a safeguard in the application process so that inmates won't copy the final and short circuit the review process.

  5. Completed final application and reference letter when received the', goes to the 5 man Application Review board which meets once a month. It is reviewed and will be placed on either a status of accepted, denied or hold. Usually more information is required or a reference letter will be requested and the inmate will be asked for the information by mail.

  6. Accepted final applications are filed accordingly and the inmate's information is put in a parole stat sheet and given to the district parole office each month. A letter is written to the parole board within 6 months of each review until they successfully make parole or do a serve-all. Accepted applicants correspond with staff and board members regularly for the rest of their incarceration. Board members will visit chaplains or those in prison ministry directly involved with the inmate to check on their progress.

  7. Application review board members actively search for a mentor who wilt visit the inmate monthly for the last 2 yrs. (or less ) of his sentence.

* The application process takes at least 3 months to complete. We are unable to accept applications for those who are in need of immediate housing. Suggested time to request an application would be one to two years pre-release. We are not a halfway house to parole to. We are a place for Christian men who desire to apply their faith to living in the free world. We are called Wholeway because Jesus doesn't go 'halfway'
